Save a picture of the whole screen in a file:
Command-Shift-3
A file named Picture 1 is created on the startup disk. Additional pictures are numbered Picture 2, Picture 3, and so on.
Copy a picture of the whole screen to the Clipboard:
Command-Shift-Control-3
You can then paste the picture into any document that accepts pictures.
Save a picture of part of the screen in a file:
Command-Shift-4
Then drag across the part of the screen you want to make into a picture. To constrain the capture area to a square, keep the Shift key pressed as you drag. When you release the mouse, a file named Picture 1 is created on the startup disk. Additional pictures are numbered Picture 2, Picture 3, and so on. You can open the picture in the TextEdit application or in any application that reads PICT files.

Set the CapsLock key. Press Command-Shift-4 then click the window you want to capture. A file named Picture 1 is created on the startup disk. Additional pictures are numbered Picture 2, Picture 3, and so on. To cancel, press the Space bar before you click.
